F.A.Q

Below are some frequently asked questions.  Don't hesitate to give us a call or shoot us an email, should you have additional questions.

How do I get started?

That’s easy!  The first step is to schedule your first lesson.  During that lesson, your instructor can determine your current level and recommend an appropriate course for you to continue.  To set up your first lesson now, email 7citiesballroom@gmail.com or call 757-903-4867

Do I need a partner?

Absolutely not! Private lessons allow you to take lessons with a trained instructor as your partner. And in group classes you will meet many different people, some will be with a partner and many will not. There are some couples who even take lessons separately due to their personal schedules. No matter what your situation, a fabulous instructor will guide you.

Do I need any dance experience?

Absolutely not! It is sometimes more difficult to "undo" some previous dance knowledge. We teach a very well rounded social curriculum and enjoy instructing anyone from the beginning basics. We take pride in introducing ballroom dancing to all that have the desire to learn.

How long will it take?

The length of your course will depend on how many dances you want to learn and how proficient you wish to become in each dance. However, you will be able to dance after your first lesson.

How much do lessons cost?

Prices vary, depending on a number of factors, but primarily on whether you take private or group classes. Every one is encouraged to start with our introductory special for just $99, which includes 3 (50 minute) private lessons. After those lessons, your instructor will recommend a program and will be able to answer any questions, so you will have the knowledge to make an informed choice.  Group classes also depend on the location and number of weeks the class is scheduled.  Group classes are anywhere from 4-6 weeks long and range from $48 - $72 per person.

When can I take lessons?

Our hours of operation are Mon-Fri, 1:00pm-9:00pm and Saturday by appointment only.  Private Lessons are available 7 days a week and are generally scheduled Mon–Fri from 1:00pm–9pm and Sat from 10am–2pm.  Group classes are generally Mon-Fri from 6pm–9pm and Sat from 11am-2pm.  See the calendar for group class schedules.

What type of dances will I learn?

You can learn the very latest steps in any social dance - Salsa, Swing, Hustle, Samba, Merengue, Fox Trot, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Mambo, Waltz, Tango, and others.

Where will I use this type of dancing?

Everywhere! The type of dancing 7 Cities Ballroom teaches is for use in any social dance situation. Although many students come to us initially to learn for a special occasion, such as, a wedding, cruise, military ball, etc., they find many other times for dance in their personal lives.

Why should I take private instruction?

Private instruction is the fastest and most cost-effective way to learn ballroom dancing.  While dances such as ballet, tap, jazz, etc., can be danced alone, ballroom dancing is a partner dance.  So, whether you learn with a teacher as your partner or a significant other, private instruction is the best way to learn because you learn at your own pace.

Do I need special dance shoes?  And where can I purchase them?

It is not necessary to purchase a pair of dance shoes, although there are great benefits to owning your own dance shoes.  We suggest wearing shoes that are comfortable to you, but have little to no tread.  Tennis shoes and shoes with no back (flip flops, clogs, mules, etc) are not recommended. Ballroom dance shoes are different and beneficial because they typically have suede soles and a flexible arch.  We have a great selection of both women and men's dance shoes available at our studio.  Stop by the studio and check them out!
